Cats' Health Tips 1 - Help Them Drink Water

Have you ever get into trouble with helping your cats drink water?

Should I drink water? Please, I don't want it :(

For me, YEAH, all the time.

Why they hate to drink water?

Cats are wild animal. Even if they are domesticated, they still have wild characteristics. They tend to drink a little cup of water, because they used to drink blood of their prey instead. In other words, they can get enough moisture from the wild, thus they don't need to drink water to maintain their nutrition. This nature makes domesticated cats unfamiliar with drinking water at home.

However, like as human, they should take enough water, as recommended daily requirements. If they don't get the daily demand, they will be in trouble. When cats are suffered from lack of water in their body, they get infected on their kidneys and easily causes kidney stones. It can be happened in sudden without your recognition.

What can you do then?

If cats like to drink water, that's the best. If they don't, however, you should make them drink forcibly or naturally, no matter what happens. The one I recommend is using anchovy water, making it to boil water in which anchovy is soaked up, to encourage your cats to drink it. The tasty smell stimulates their nose.

Check your cats' water bowl. Is it made from stain-less, glass, or plastic? Individual cats have different preference about from what their bowl made. In my case, I had served them water by stain-less bowls but changed to plastic bowls. Some materials may cause acnes on their jaws, so when you first change the bowl, keep watching them that whether any trouble is happened or not.

Sometimes, I pour water into their dry food when they start to eat their meal. As my cats don't have any suspicion on my behavior, they drink water first, then enjoy their dry food.

How much they should drink water?

It depends on their weight, about 50~70ml of water per 1kg. If you cannot make them get water from drinking, then the best option is wet food, sadly which is 3 times more expensive than the dry food. Most adult cats are around 4~5kg, and it is better to drink at least 200~280ml water. You should check them drink enough water everyday. Even though it looks like they fulfill their requirements, when you check it, mostly they don't.

Happy Meal Time :)

Epilogue

If you just brought them when they are young, make them enjoy drinking water. Help them be familiar with it. Then, the only thing that you may worry is to figure out how to make your cats follow you around, like Pied Piper of Hamilton!
